The time required for the packing process of any bike, triathlon bikes included, can vary greatly depending on the bike case and the complexity of your bike design. We have customers who have packed/unpacked their triathlon bikes in the Sentinel case in as little as 15 minutes, and as you become familiar with the required disassembly for your individual bike, the packing process should become more predictable. If this is your first time traveling with a bike, we recommend test packing with enough time before your trip to work through any disassembly questions or product questions with our customer service team, or your local bike mechanic.

If you are a first-time traveler with your bike or have reservations about the disassembly/packing process for your bike, there are some considerations that you should keep in mind when shopping for a travel case. You should look for a case that allows for limited bike disassembly and lets you leave your handlebars mostly intact and your seatpost installed. Bike protection should be a big concern as well, as you don't want to land in Kona or Oceanside (or wherever else you may be competing) with a broken bike and be left scrambling for a solution. It's also nice to find a travel case that allows for transport of your other gear, not just the cycling equipment. Find a case that has space to pack other racing essentials such as your swim/run gear and nutrition. Other important (and often overlooked) things to consider should be the educational resources available for the travel case (video guides, product manuals, step-by-step instructions etc.) and the customer service. Find a brand with knowledgeable and helpful resources and personnel that will enable you to travel with your bike confidently and safely.

Most hard shell and soft sided travel bags will require a similar level of disassembly. The required disassembly for popular hard cases is very similar to what can be expected for our Sentinel bike travel case - front and rear wheel removal, seatpost adjustment or removal, and recommended rear derailleur removal. Depending on the style of handlebar and the overall size of the bike, handlebar removal or partial disassembly can be required for most hard shell or soft sided travel cases marketed for triathlon bikes. Compact travel cases, such as our B2 bike case, will also work to accommodate triathlon bikes, with some additional disassembly. Customers flying with triathlon/time trial bikes in the B2 travel case are required to remove their forks, in order to pack into such a compact travel bag.

The answer to this question is largely depending on two factors - the bike travel case that you are packing and your overall fit / bike size. In something like our Sentinel bike case, the base bar can always be left installed, and removal of the aerobar extensions is dependent on your bike size and distance from the rear dropouts to the front of your aerobars. As a general rule of thumb for safe transport, it is recommended to remove the aerobar extensions as this part of your cockpit can be quite fragile (not to mention, quite expensive to repair or replace).

The reality is that your bike is not guaranteed to arrive safely if you choose to ship it using a courier service instead of flying with it on a commercial airline. Airline baggage handlers and shipping providers (such as UPS, FedEx, DHL etc.) alike are notorious for treating packages or luggage without the care and respect that travelers hope for, so regardless of which bike transportation option you choose, it is highly recommended to pack your bike in a protective travel bag / solution. Most courier/shipping services will allow you to ship a bike when packed in a protective bike travel case, which would offer you the best of both worlds. If you opt to ship your bike in a cardboard bike box, consider accessory protection such as the Orucase Frame Protection Kit, or similar bike-protection kits that will help cushion vulnerable areas of your bike. Foam pipe insulation, folded up cardboard scraps, and old beach towels can serve as added protection for travelers on a budget.

The debate between soft and hard-shell bike travel cases is a longstanding one, and each style of case has its benefits and downsides. Hard-shell travel cases offer the perception of increased protection due to the construction type, but the increased weight, awkward shapes and sizes, and limited handle locations can often lead baggage handlers to treat these items more rough. The closure mechanisms on hard-shell travel bags can be trickier for TSA/customs agents to operate than a more traditional zipper system featured on most soft-sided cases, leading to case damage or the transport while the system is not secured. On the flip side, a fully soft case that features no hard plastic or metal reinforcement may not offer adequate protection to safely transport your prized possession. A hybrid case design, that features some hard plastic or metal components in the vulnerable areas of the case, while utilizing durable and weight-conscious fabric materials in other areas, may be the best of both worlds for offering protection in a lightweight, easy-to-transport travel bag.
