The rear derailleur is one of the most fragile components on any bike — road, gravel, mountain, or triathlon — and on modern bikes, it's often one of the most expensive too. Outside of the frame itself, it's the single part most worth protecting when you fly.
There's nothing worse than building your bike up the day before a race, or on the first morning of a cycling trip you've spent months planning, only to discover your derailleur got bent in transit and no longer shifts properly. That's an inconvenient fix at home — and a potentially trip-ending one if you're traveling internationally with limited access to parts or a shop. A little extra care before you close your case saves a lot of frustration on the other end.

Other case designs — like the Orucase Sentinel — mount the bike so the frame is suspended above the base of the case rather than resting on it. In this style, the derailleur floats in space and never contacts the bottom of the bag, which helps prevent damage from drops or bottom-impact hits.
That said, suspension alone doesn't guarantee protection. Side impacts to the case, or contact from other items packed alongside the frame (like your wheels), can still reach the derailleur.

Removal isn't strictly required in a suspended-mount case, but it's still recommended for a worry-free travel day. If you do leave it installed, add padding — a grease rag wrapped around the derailleur and secured with a zip tie is a simple, effective option; bubble wrap or foam padding also work well.

How to Remove the Derailleur or Hanger

On most bikes, the derailleur attaches to a hanger, which then connects to the frame. To detach the derailleur from the hanger:
  1. Locate the single bolt connecting the derailleur to the hanger — typically loosened with a 5mm hex/Allen wrench.
  2. Loosen and remove the bolt.
  3. Mechanical shifting: the derailleur will hang from the rear shifter cable once detached. Pad it and secure it to your chainstay so it doesn't move in transit.
  4. Shimano Di2 or Campagnolo EPS (electronic, wired): unplug the derailleur for more freedom to position it when packing.

If you'd rather remove the derailleur and hanger together as one piece, the process varies by frame — some use a single external bolt at the rear dropout, others use a two-bolt system. Confirm your frame's specific attachment style before removing it. Once detached, wrap the derailleur and hanger in padding and either secure them along your chainstays or pack them safely elsewhere in your case.

What to Use for Derailleur Padding

Whether your derailleur stays on the frame or comes off entirely, padding is what actually prevents damage. A few reliable, low-cost options:
  • Grease rag or towel — wrap and secure with tape or a zip tie
  • Bubble wrap — good for extra cushioning around an installed derailleur
  • An old t-shirt — works in a pinch, secured the same way
  • Rubber gear strap — useful for keeping any of the above padding in place without shifting during transit
Whatever padding you use, secure it firmly — loose padding that shifts mid-flight isn't doing its job. Purpose-built foam or plastic derailleur/dropout protection products exist as well, but check compatibility with your specific case first — many aren't designed to work with cases that require mounting your dropouts to an internal frame, like the Sentinel.
